Design of Enterprise Hazardous Waste Tracking Application

Business Problem

An aerospace manufacturer needed a comprehensive enterprise-wide hazardous waste management system.

This was a critical application that required a high degree of reliability and accuracy to meet legal, operational and management requirements. Upper management set aggressive goals to reduce the volume of hazardous waste generated and the costs of handling and disposing of it. At the same time, because it took up to 18 months for managers to get detailed data, management called for a redesign of the information-reporting process.

Solution

Amherst Information Architects fulfilled all requirements of the new system, including:

  • Getting up-to-the-minute information to managers;
  • Compliance with Federal and state laws and regulations;
  • Streamlining the handling and tracking of over 100,000 containers of hazardous waste from "cradle-to-grave;"
  • Notification of staff before compliance problems emerged; and
  • Interfacing with enterprise data and compliance with enterprise IT standards.

In the process, we coordinated the work of business users, operational staff, enterprise IT staff and external vendors.

To date, we have designed and deployed four generations of this web-enabled, intranet-based application, at a calculated savings of $3.8 million to the company.
